Ebony Phoenix
This striking kuromesode—shortened to 120 cm for modern practicality—is crafted from deep black chirimen silk and features the Maru ni Chigai-Takanoha family crest. Depicting crossed hawk feathers enclosed in a circle, this crest symbolises strength, determination, and the sharp insight of the hawk—traits historically admired by samurai families.
The lower hem reveals an explosive yabane (arrow-feather) panel dominated by a golden phoenix in soaring flight, surrounded by a vivid autumn landscape of botan (peonies), chrysanthemums, camellias, and maple leaves in gold, red, orange, pink, and green embroidery.
Irregular, jagged black borders slice through the floral display like scattered feathers, amplifying the dramatic contrast between the dark ground and the opulent, shimmering motifs.
A rare, statement piece that balances tradition, symbolism, and bold artistry, this kimono reflects the refined craftsmanship of the mid-Showa era.
